Hart D, Buchanan R, Howe B
© The Institute of Actuaries of Australia, 2007
(textbook and CD-ROM) ISBN 0 978-0-858130-739
The 7th Edition is a major revision of this important text which takes into account recent developments in actuarial techniques and the general insurance environment. In particular it incorporates changes to the legislative, market and social environment, arising in large part from the recommendation of the HIH Royal Commission. These changes have led to much greater responsibility for general insurance actuaries. This text is a reference for actuaries and general insurance practitioners and students, in Australia and overseas.

Foreword |
The original preparation of this book commenced in the early 1980’s as a resource for actuarial students. The authors, upon realising the magnitude of their task and the length of time that would be required to complete it to their satisfaction, decided to release material to students progressively, as it was finalised. This practice continued until 1996, when the first complete Edition (5th) was published. Further minor revisions were subsequently undertaken by the authors and the 6th Edition was published in 2001....more.

Preface |
This book is intended primarily as the basic text for actuarial students studying the general insurance subject of the examinations of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. We hope that it is also of value to actuaries and actuarial students generally, as well as to general insurance practitioners.
Broadly, the actuary’s role in general insurance is to provide advice to an insurer’s board and management, to help them to meet their obligations to shareholders and potential shareholders and to define and quantify their corporate financial objectives and to control the company’s financial operations to meet these objectives. This definition extends to advice provided to auditors, legal representatives, supervisory authorities and so on who in various ways have an interest in the insurer’s operations .......more.
